Mahoro Must Stay campaign - banner painting

Mahoro Can Stay!

After much hard work and campaigning, we have finally been given the wonderful news that Mahoro has been granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK.  Please see this story in the South Manchester Reporter.  The remainder of this page goes into more detail on Mahoro's story and our campaign.

Mahoro's campaign

Mahoro is a member of our congregation who was seeking asylum in the UK.

Our campaign to support her in this goal was backed by MPs from all the major parties, including her local Liberal Democrat MP John Leech, as well as local councillors and Bishops Nigel McCulloch, Stephen Lowe and Michael Lewis. We had articles about Mahoro and our campaign published in the South Manchester Reporter and Manchester Evening News, and on the Manchester Diocesan website.

To help with our cause, we used a leaflet about Mahoro, a standard letter to send to the Home Office, and a petition.  Approximately 4000 signatures on such petitions were sent to the House of Commons via John Leech.  We also regularly send postcards signed by sympathisers with Mahoro's situation to the Home Office.  We estimate that the Home Office received about 5000 of these in total.

You can hear Mahoro's story in her own words.

Mahoro was awarded one of the Manchester Woman of the Year awards for her contributions to health agencies both in the local area and across the UK.
